It’s that time again!

We have been very busy with a few things!! The restaurant seating area has been refurbished which includes new tables and chairs along with a brand new floor. We are currently waiting for a new refrigerated counter to be fitted for Ozzies fresh home made cakes. The restaurant has a new coffee machine (just like Stevensons Rocket) serving Latte’s and much more. We are even selling Panini’s, calamari, humous and pitta bread. I think you will love the changes. (All we need now is to get Ozzie smiling. All these changes and he is still miserable).

Alongside refurbishing the restaurant we have also updated our linens department, where we have several brand new lines and cracking offers. Keep an eye on our adverts in the local papers. Again we have had new flooring and racking and we have received excellent feedback so far.
We have just held a staff retirement party for Don in Hastings. He has been with us from the very start (1977). He came in the shop to get his sponsorship for West Hill Boxing Club (his passion alongside West Ham FC) and he never escaped. As I mentioned in my speech at his party, this will be the only time in his life he has got parole.

He is going to be spending his retirement with his family in Spain (he always liked the current bun) and also spending his time in Essex.  What a life!! He is 80 years old in January and still packs a mean punch on the punch bag. He is a lovely man and it has been a pleasure working with him for so long. I wish him all the very best.

I hope you like the photo of Handy Chair and a friend waiting for the bookies to open. Don’t they look happy.
We are now busy organising Christmas. This year we are launching the opening of our Grotto on the 22nd of November and this year it is going to be extra special. Not only will we have our nativity set back with the real reindeer, calf, sheep, donkey and of course the main man himself( Father Christmas) we have purchased for this year a North Pole scene with animated figures which include polar bears, Eskimos and seals. You will also get the chance to visit Father Christmas’s workshop and see the characters making toys. Also on the opening day we will have a fun fair with free rides, hot dogs, burgers, rock, toffee apples, candy floss and a hog roast.
What a day!! Do not miss it!! The grotto will open at 10.30am.

Get Set for the New Season

Hi All
Long time no speak!! We have been rushing around all over the place. I have got to tell you Christmas was UNBELIEVABLE.
The best ever.   For those of you that didn’t visit our Eastbourne store  your children and grandchildren missed a real treat, we had a great nativity set with a real donkey 2 sheep a calf a goat and our 2 lovely reindeer. We also had the main man Santa here in our grotto and his animated workshop. Mother Christmas was also here having breakfast with the children. This year will be even bigger and better as we have just purchased our own North Pole scene with moving polar bears, seals penguins etc. You wait and see it will be amazing and the kids will absolutely love it.
We are kicking off the year with our great garden promotions. At Easter we have the Easter Bunny in both stores Eastbourne on Good Friday and Hastings on Easter Saturday who will be giving out free easter eggs to the children. We also have the DGH hospital radio broadcasting live so come along and give your support for all those poor people in hospital. Last Christmas I visited the DGH with Mother Christmas and spoke to people who were unwell at Christmas. I came away very satisfied that we had given those poor people something to smile about.
I must apologise that due to the bad weather part of our Pet Store roof blew off so we had to close the Grooming parlour for 8 weeks. I am pleased to say that we are finally all back to normal and it’s great to have them back again.
We are shortly going to give the restaurant a face lift (hopefully we will manage to get a plastic smile for Ozzy). We are asking people to fill out a questionnaire with any suggestions welcome. The winner of this will receive gift vouchers worth £100. Please keep a look out on our website www.esk.co.uk
I am also delighted to announce that our website is being updated all the time and I hope you agree is vastly improved due to Kerri returning back from maternity leave after having her beautiful baby boy.
Regards
Bob

Out of Hibernation!

It has been a long cold winter.  The cold gets in my bones as I am getting old now so sorry for the hibernation on this blog. On a more cheerful note the sun is now out and we are going mad. This winter we changed compost suppliers which has been a very good decision. Many people have commented on the quality. Well done Westland!

In our linens department we have new textile designs which are on display in our room settings. We also have a great selection of cushions starting at 99p. We also have  beautiful designs of quilt covers and curtains. All the latest designs. Well done Handychair you have got a good eye.
Ellie has left our linens department to have her baby daughter. Good luck Ellie and Chris. Thank you Ellie.  Sandra Sam and Sue are still with us and doing a great job along with Megan and Jenny.

Over in Pets Pantry in Eastbourne we now have a new dog grooming salon called “Pugs in A Tub”. I would like to welcome Clare, Pete Amber Jay and Tricia who are all doing a great job. They did a great job on Vanessa, she looked 10 years younger! No seriously come and have a look you won’t be disappointed. Give them a try.

Famous Fred and his team have got the Garden Club up and running again. Every Thursday night its doing well beyond our expectations. We still have the freshest plants in the area at the best prices with knowledgeable and helpful staff. Sign up today it’s totally free, great value for money as always which is what you get at ESK. Remember the name that’s our game.

It’s great to see the car valeting boys busy again after seeing them brave the ice with their buckets in the winter. Those boys certainly earn their money. They do a very good job. Probaly the best in the area. Good luck Boys!

I now have a new girl called Keri helping with our web site and face book. She has been with us a few years and we never knew she had this talent (A great girl) She then goes and announces she is pregnant ! (I think there must be something in the water) Congratulations to Keri and Tom. Have a look at what she has done with the site at www.esk.co.uk and also take a look at us on facebook.

My job looks an easy one but if you only knew that David and I travel more miles than Alan Wicker. We recently travelled to Poland looking for garden products and came back with furniture! We then went to Lithuania and came back with nothing but a headache! It took us a day to get there spending over 4 hours at Copenhagen then flew on to Klapeida. We then had a further 30 miles to our hotel. We got up the next morning to go to the trade site only to realise that the emails we had received had hugely overstated the size of the trade show. (what a waste of time and money). We decided to go back to our hotel so we could change our flights to go home early. When we got to the hotel I went in to change some money for the taxi and when I came out the taxi had disappeared and the road had been blocked off by police cars. I have never seen so many plain clothes security guards. They pushed me out of the way, there must have been 30 large black cars with blacked out windows. One of the security guards told me to cross the road to a side street where I found David sitting in a Taxi surrounded by guards. We paid the taxi and scarpered. When we got back to the hotel we found out the Vice President of Lithuania, a Senior Government Official from Belaruse, a very high Ranking Officer from Russia and about 50 senior policitians were all staying at the same hotel as us! Security guarded the restaurant, the bar, the toilets and the lift. They were all very well dressed and were very fit and strong so we were very careful!. All in a day’s work and if it was easy everybody would do it. We managed to change our flights and flew home. All this to find new products.

That said I was in Porto Rico recently and ordered chicken where I was happily eating away and even remarked to the waiter that the chicken tasted good. He said that cock fighting was legal and we were having birds they had finished with. I didn’t eat anymore!

Take Care

Halloween

Hi Again
It’s all started again. We had the Halloween competition on Saturday the 27th of October. I must say a huge thank you to all the parents and grandparents for all the effort and support for your involvement and ideas in getting the kids ready in their costumes. There were some fabulous entrants and costumes. Thank you.

I hope the children got as much enjoyment and pleasure as we did. Our staff actually dressed up again this year for Halloween. James or should I say Jasmine looked amazing in his dress and size 11 stillettos.

A real sight for sore eyes.

Well That was Summer!

Hi Again

It looks like the summer is over, if you can say we have had a summer that is! Our Halloween display is up, it looks fantastic and we have some superb products on sale.

See our in store display by clicking here

On Saturday the 27th of October we are holding a fun Halloween competition between 11 and 1 o clock. We have Charlie the Clown to amuse the children. There will be 2 classes under 8 and over 8’s. The first prize is £50. The second prize is £25. The third prize is £10. This year we are running a large range of costumes as well as the accessories and decorations. Come along and make it a great day.

We are now clearing stocks of quilts at silly prices. A single quilt is £5.00 a double is £6.00 and a King is £7.00, unbelievable , no wonder we have no money.

Our Pets department is going great guns. We have got all our winter bird seed and fat ball deals in.  Fat balls 50 for £5.99 Other offers are: James Well- beloved £36.99 for 15kg across the range. The best around.  Whilst stocks last.
Look at our website for these offers. We are now trying to put our new dog coat display in.It’s brilliant. We also have dog and cat stockings on sale and Christmas toys for your pets. I can’t wait to see them dogs in their hold-ups and them cats in their suspenders!!!
This year we are encouraging different charities to bag pack (we love to help and support the community). You are all so generous. Twinkling stars raised over £600.00 pounds in one day.  Excellent news, well done.

There is no need to feel the cold this year. We have house coal on sale for £3.99 for 10kg. It’s cheaper than last year. Firebrand £4.99. Heat logs at £6.99. Kindling at £3.49. Traditional logs at £4.99. Firelighters at 69p for 14 and Ice breakers at £3.99.  We also will be stocking snow shovels and sledges.

We have Christmas stock arriving daily in store. Come and see our brilliant range of single and boxed Christmas Cards. Don’t forget our huge range of fireworks will be arriving in store next week.

A crazy thought of mine. How do you think breakfast with Santa sounds? The kids come along and have breakfast with Father Christmas and get a present. Vanessa has all ready put her name down.  And as you know we have the Real Father Christmas. Let me know your thoughts. This year our Christmas Grotto and workshop will be out of this world.  It is double the size of last year with a brand new workshop in our Eastbourne store. A fabulous display.

Hope to see you soon

Christmas has come early!

Hi Again
What a few weeks we have had. We must give a big round of applause to everyone who has taken part and been involved in the Olympics ...And I mean everyone from the planners to the builders (never thought that it was possible) Congratulations to those who competed and supported the whole event. We've definitely have got to be proud to be British!
Now we move on to CHRISTMAS. Yes that’s right at our ESK Eastbourne Store we are holding a CHRISTMAS WEEKEND ON THE 18th AND 19th OF AUGUST.

Santa is coming to ESK for a holiday (well that’s what we have told him anyway). He is bringing his elves and his animated display.  Possibly the best you have seen. AND IT'S FREE. He will have his workshop and toymakers here making all the toys. The kids will love it they can come in and fill out a wish list and post it in Santa’s post box and see what the main man can do.  So come and bring your children along  11.00  till 3.00 on the 18th and 19th of August. Even the adults will enjoy it! probably the best Father Christmas around.  And remember it is all Free.

After this we move on to Halloween, Fireworks and our Christmas Displays and products. This year we've probably got the best selection of Halloween products for miles around. We've really gone to town and have a large range of costumes and novelties. And of course the staff will be participating and dressing for the part (some of them won’t have to try too hard)
It has been one of the wettest summers on record and it won’t be long till we get our sledges and wellington boots out . The weather has gone mad and so have we!!!
It is my scouse nephew's birthday tomorrow and as a treat I have put an extra £10 in his Nan’s purse. Good thinking eh??!!
See you soon,
BOB

Le Jubilée

Hi All

What a time we have all had with the Diamond Jubilee. We are all such a patriotic bunch and quite rightly so. I was so lucky to be in France at the time watching it on the television. It was a fantastic few days and not to be out done the French and the Ex Pats put on a street party not to be beaten with the full works, union jacks and bunting galore!! The French attempted to make a shepherds pie and coronation chicken and we all, (over 200 English and French) toasted our Queen by singing both the English and French National Anthems. There were jazz bands and Victor Brox a famous blues artist, who was amazing . You would never believe it was France just look at the photos . All the profits went to the local schools. Even the mayor got p****d . Well done!

We were very busy over the jubilee period at ESK and sold out of all the bunting.

What’s happened to the weather? A few lovely days and then rain and winds again. So much for the hose pipe ban.
Last weekend saw the start of Linda’s wedding preparations . A load of the staff went out on the town for her hen party, including The General, James. The bride and groom  have been together 28 years so they should know how it all works by now, especially with the kids and grandchildren. Linda has worked for me for over 10 years. The wedding is definitely a rival for a Big Fat Gypsy Wedding. Definitely not a bash for the feint hearted, you have to be brave to attend!!. Seriously Linda and Brian Good Luck for your special day .  If I wasn’t on parole I would join you.

On a sadder note an old friend of mine (David Boggis) passed away in Suffolk . My wife and I went to pay our last respects and we met all these older chaps I didn’t recognise and found out I was in the same class at school!! That makes me an old B*****d too! I haven’t seen them for nearly 50 years. It was a very sad occasion. My deepest condolences Janet , he will be sadly missed.

Back to work now. We are trying to improve our textile department at last . Scott Ellis (Handy Chair from Hollington) has been over-seeing the development and he has done a great job. Well done Scott. It is amazing how great the stock looks in the right setting.

Take care all.
Bob.

Reigning or Raining?

Hi Again
It’s all happening this year. We have got a hose pipe ban in East Sussex and it’s not stopped raining, the weather has gone bananas. I spoke to friends in the South of France and they are still having frosts. It’s mad!!
We've got a great solution to the hosepipe ban, we are the only place where you can buy the amazing 'LeakyHose' irrigation system by the metre, check it out HERE
We now a have a full range of Jubilee stock in store. There is a large selection which includes flags, bunting, cups, serviettes, aprons, hats plates and much more. So don’t forget if you are having a street party ESK is the place to come. See a great selection by clicking HERE
Our costume jewellery and hair accessory department is now open and is doing well.  We have plenty of choice for all ages in the hair accessory range.
I am now sending my son to China on a research trip. He is 16 years old and has been studying Mandarin language for three years. It’s pay -back time. Let’s hope he finds some interesting products. I am sure he will I have every faith in him.
We are now starting to re-arrange and extend our textiles department in our Eastbourne store. We are putting in 6 display beds with our latest best selling design with matching accessories. I am sure you will love it. We also have a new large range of decorated and ornate mirrors in store. They won’t improve my looks though but you will love them.
Regards
Bob

A Happy New Year to Everyone

I hope you all had a fantastic festive season now it’s over we must knuckle down and see what we can do to combat all the doom and gloom that we keep hearing in the media. Our buying team is out and about searching for bargains to save you money.

It was lovely to see all the children’s happy excited faces with Father Christmas and I hope all their wish lists came true. Just wait until this year we have got plenty of new tricks up our sleeves to make it even better, (remember ESK is where dreams come true)
I must apologise for promising the web site would be up and running. Unfortunately when you get the technical people involved they discover all sorts of problems. Our intentions are good and we are still working on it.  Please bear with us.
It won’t be long before the days get longer and we will be in our gardens. Our garden club starts again soon Green Fingered Fred will be dusting down his microphone and oiling his trainers and putting and   a smile on people’s faces again it’s going to be a special time this year.
We are about to start work on the textile and linen’s department in Eastbourne we have nearly changed the light’s and we have got the new flooring and we have some new stockists on board. So it is very positive to say the least.
On a sad note Luscious Lucy who I have mentioned before has decided to retire, her and Bootleg George were playing games in their garden. Luscious fell and damaged her arm. It is very sad she has been with us for 16 years and we will miss her badly. A very loyal worker and what a lap dancer!. Enjoy your retirement Luscious you deserve it, (although I have heard a rumour that she is thinking of going back to lap dancing!)
Once again, Happy

A Santa-stic Day!

Hi Again
We had a great day on Saturday. I have never seen queues like it to see Father Christmas. It was simply amazing to see all the kid’s faces. The queues were so big my son Bobby had to give the kids AND adults sweets!  The kid’s loved the reindeers and horse and cart and Our Father Christmas was amazing , he never stopped all day, didn't even have time for a pee, although maybe I should check the grotto to make sure! He treated the last four kids the same as the first four . He worked flat out from 11.45 to 4.45 smiling and talking to all the kids and I owe him and the three elves a huge big Thank you for all their hard work.

The list of people to thank is endless. We had the Eastbourne AM Rotary Club here along with others bag packing on the day who managed to raise over £600 pounds for charity. The charity was Breakaway- a weekend break for around young disabled people. Everyone  was amazing . The day was co-ordinated by Peter Lindsey who worked tirelessly to ensure that the day was a huge success. Thank You Peter. We had Rik Scott from Sovereign FM , The Mayoress of Eastbourne, Carolyn Heapes, Christina Ewbank president of Chamber of Commerce and Mercedes Benz from Eastbourne, Sue Mulvey from the Esperance Hospital, Stephen Lloyd our local MP, Councillor David Tutt, Beverley Thompson from Southern Water here all bag packing.  A BIG Thank you to you all and to all the Rotarians that also helped to raise money for such a worthy cause. I would also like to thank Hayley Scott who was a real trouper and the staff from the Eastbourne Herald who took photos on the day,  the face painters and magician  Al Plonko who worked non- stop to entertain the queues of people. I would like to thank all the staff and management. I am sorry if I have left anyone out.  THANK YOU TO YOU ALL.
You can see loads of great photos of the day by clicking HERE
Seasonal Greetings to you all.

Thanks to All of Our Customers

Hi Again.
I would love to say a big Thank You to everyone who supported us in our Halloween project this year. What a wonderful success after 10 years without doing Halloween. Most of the staff in Eastbourne dressed up and looked the part which was great. Watch out for next year we know what direction we are heading.

Don’t forget our Father Christmas will be arriving in store on Saturday the 26th of November with his REAL reindeer. Come and see him and the grand opening of our Christmas Grotto at 12.00 pm. Bring the children it’s only £3.00 .  They get to see Father Christmas and a present. Great value for money.
David (you may remember him from earlier posts, the one with the hat) has come up with a fantastic idea for the disabled. We will re-open on the 6th of December after the store closes at 5.30. We will specially re-open the store at 6pm till 8pm for Blue Badge holders and their carers. They will receive nibbles and a drink and more importantly have the store to themselves for a couple of hours to browse and do any shopping. If you are interested in coming along ring the store and let us know .
We have a great announcement to make: By the end of November we will start operating online sales. We are still currently developing the site so please be patient but it is definitely a step in the right direction for all our customers. Just key in www.esk.co.uk.
Don’t forget  we are still regularly updating our book section. Paperback fiction novels are £1.99 each or 3 for £5.00. We also have a great selection of coffee table book’s, autobiographies and children’s books all at great prices. Just in time for Christmas.

We have had Peter the poppy seller in store with his table of goodie’s. He sits there for 14 days on the trot voluntarily.  He does a grand job for a good cause. One year we tried him as Father Christmas but because of his shape we had to stuff him with cushions! Yes you’ve guessed it his trousers fell down, so I am sure you agree it’s best he sticks to selling poppy’s.
When it comes to this time of year it takes me back to when I used to work on the fairground’s in the summer I would be scratching around trying to earn a living which I did by selling Xmas paper on the street’s. I had a friend who had a café, his name was Jonny Mouser who we knew by the name of Micky. I would look after his café when he went on holiday. He was a really funny fellow and one day he asked me to help him down the stairs from his flat to the ground floor with a piano. We got out of the door and along to the landing OK until we came to a set of stairs. This chap came out to give us a hand and unfortunately we dropped the piano on him. We were horrified. He kept making these funny noises and we thought his was messing around and the more we laughed the more we squashed him. Little did we know at the time that he was deaf and dumb! I bet he has kept away from piano’s ever since. We got the piano down to the ground floor in the end and he saw the funny side and was a smashing bloke.
Anyway, Thank’s once again for your support and hope to see you soon.

Getting Crafty!

Hi again.
Well we have had a busy summer, we have almost built the front to our Christmas Grotto and we are well underway with our firework department. This year I am pleased to say that we have our largest ever selection of fireworks where they will be displayed for all to see on a television. We are also getting ready for Halloween where we have a very impressive display for all to see and great competitive prices and choice available. We also have our brand new range of Windsor and Newton artists products available in store due to popular demand with all our lovely customers. Come and see our very impressive products.
Dave and Vanessa have been away on a buying trip to Holland and sent us back a picture:
A Nice Pair of...
...Dave is the one on the right wearing the hat!
They were supposed to be working!!?

Well what do you think of all the riots and looters. We had a tip off that they were going to mob Hastings so we cleared the shop windows and filled them with security guards with baseball bats. You should have seen their faces they didn’t want to play. They didn’t need to be wearing hoodies when they looked in our windows one quick glance and they were off! We didn’t need to worry as the police did a fabulous job and kept them moving, so well done Old Bill. I heard a couple got put in prison for four years they should do the same as China. They don’t get fed until their families come and pay. It certainly isn’t like a holiday camp over there. I remember a few years ago three English guys went skint and stuffed a Chinese firm for a few quid and four years later they stupidly returned to buy again and got recognised and put in jail (not a nice place) and were not released until their families sold their homes and paid the debt. If you get shot in prison the first thing they send you the bill for is the bullet!
Don’t forget we have a free demo day in Craft on the 1st of October from 10.30 till 3.30. Gaynor , Mandy and Ann will be demonstrating our new products and giving you the chance to shop for those hard to find materials and learn new things obtaining professional advice  remember  it is  a great day, free parking  with  free advice from Gaynor and her team.  Gaynor’s team have also offered their brilliant services to demonstrate at the 65th birthday celebrations at Help The Aged store in Eastbourne town  from 10.30am till 3.30pm on Thursday the 13th of October. Esk helping the community again.

Don’t forget any of your Football Clubs and Sports Clubs if you are trying to raise money for new kits or funds  you are welcome to a day bag packing . Phone Linda or Scott on 01323 435500  to book a place.

Frites and Frights

Hi Again
I am having a break in France which is good as it gives me idea’s to improve the business and make it interesting.  One night in France we went to a street market and put out long benches and French and English people all mixed together with music and street entertainers. A bowl of mussels and chips for  8 euros and a bottle of wine  for 6 euros. It was a lovely family night with no yobs ruining things. Let me know your thoughts on us having a Thursday Moule and Frites night at the Craft and Gardeners Club.
